ARTHROPOD BIOLOGY Effect of Diet and Mating Status on Ovarian Development in a Predaceous Stink Bug Perillus bioculatus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)

چکیده
A method is presented to quantitatively score the degree of ovarian maturation in a predacious pentatomid with asynchronous follicle development. The effects of artiÞcial diet and mating status on ovarian maturation rates were examined. Ovarian scores were not inßuenced by mating status but were signiÞcantly lower in females fed the artiÞcial diet. Ovarian follicles start forming when females are 2.3 d old, reaching a peak at 4.5 d. In controls, the rate of new follicle formation decreases after the onset of vitellogenesis. By 4.5 d, all control ovarioles contained at least 1 vitellogenic follicle, and by 9.5 d all ovarioles had chorionated follicles. In contrast, females fed the artiÞcial diet had 40% of the ovarioles with a vitellogenic and chorionated follicle at 10.5 d of age. Mating startedwhen femaleswere 3.5 d old and correlatedwith the start of vitellogenesis. Twopeaks in mating were observed, one at 4.5 d and the other at 9.5 d. Regulatory mechanisms for oogenesis

ARTHROPOD BIOLOGY Effect of Diet and Mating on Oviposition in the Twospotted Stink Bug Perillus bioculatus (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)
Control females of the twospotted stink bug, Perillus bioculatus (F.), and those given an artiÞcial diet mated repeatedly over their lifetimes when held with males. The average number of observed matings was 4 and 8.4 in the controls and those given the artiÞcial diet, respectively. Mating and an adequate diet are prerequisites for laying a full compliment of eggs in this insect. Virgins laid a...
متن کاملPrecocious induction of vitellogenin with JH III in the twospotted stink bug, Perillus bioculatus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).
The effect of juvenile hormone (JH) III on the hemolymph composition of vitellogenin was examined in Perillus bioculatus. Adult females were treated topically with JH III, and the premature presence of vitellogenin in the hemolymph was then detected using electrophoresis and Western blot analyses. JH III treatment resulted in a dose-dependent early production of vitellogenin that was detectable...

Feeding preference, mating frequency, fecundity, and egg hatch of rice stink bug, Oebalus pugnax (F.), were examined in the laboratory. Adult rice stink bugs were allowed to feed on one of four different food sources including barnyardgrass, dallisgrass, ryegrass, and a new artificial rice flour diet. Initially, a higher percentage of females fed on all food sources than did males. Ryegrass and...
متن کاملChoosing natural enemies for conservation biological control: use of the prey detectability halflife to rank key predators of Colorado potato beetle
Determining relative strengths of trophic links is critical for ranking predators for conservation biological control. Molecular gut-content analysis enables ranking by incidence of prey remains in the gut, but differential digestive rates bias such rankings toward predators with slower rates. This bias can be reduced by indexing each predator’s half-life to that of the middle-most half-life in...
متن کاملFirst record of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), in Hungary, with description of the genitalia of both sexes.
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is recorded for the first time from Hungary. The circumstances of finding this species and a detailed description of both male and female genitalia are given. The currently known distribution, biology and significance of the species are briefly reviewed.
